How to Choose a Teething Toy

All babies are different. A teething toy may work for one baby, but not for another. Aside from pacifier, there are ample teething toy options, which may leave you feeling overwhelmed. Luckily, choosing the best teething toy for your little one isn’t a complete guessing game. Be attentive to any clues your baby may be already giving you about what kind of surfaces they want for relief.

Does your baby like to gum blankets? Soft, plastic baby toys can be the stuff your baby needs. If your child looks for harder objects to gum on, there are a variety of hard plastic teether toys to choose from. An added bonus is that they are totally safe for baby teeth to gum on. By paying attention to these clues, you’re more likely to get a teething toy your baby will enjoy.

Advantages of Teething Toys for Your Baby

When your baby is teething, their new teeth are working on breaking through their gums. For many babies, teething is a painful, uncomfortable, and it can be frustrating to see your child hurting. During this stage, your baby may be eating less, losing sleep, getting diarrhea, and crying non-stop.  Their gums may be shiny, red and swollen. Your baby may experience a fever on low temperature, known as teething fever, possibly due to gum inflammation. You may be able to even feel the tooth by gently touching their gums with one of your fingers.

When teething, babies will look for any object (such as rattles and baby teethers) to put in their mouth. This can be dangerous if baby decides to put an object that is a choking hazard in their mouth. Finding suitable baby teething toys will give your child a safe way to chew on objects. Designed exclusively for the little ones, teething toys are easy for your baby to grab, hold, and place inside the mouth. Depending on the toy, they may appeal to multiple sensory experiences. This increases the chances of your baby using the teething toy over something else.

Safe, Non-Toxic Baby Teething Toys

Not only is it important to choose a toy that your baby will enjoy, but it’s also essential that the teething toys you buy are safe. Stay away from toys that are potential choking hazards and ones that could be toxic to their health.

 Materials to Avoid

  • BPA or Bisphenol-A: A plastic that mimics the hormone estrogen in the body, and disturbs the body’s natural hormone levels.
  • BPS or Bisphenol-S: Even more toxic than BPA.  Always check the material of the teether. Those that claim they are BPA free may have replaced the BPA with BPS.
  • PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride: This happens to be of the most common plastics in the world and the most toxic. This is a must avoid material!
  • Phthalates: A chemical added to plastic, especially in teething toys, to make them soft, supple and malleable. This chemical does not bond to plastic, which means that over time, the chemicals will leak out. You do not want your baby ingesting this dangerous chemical. Phthalates are a known carcinogen.
  • Ethylene Vinyl Acetate: Commonly used in medical products. Try to avoid because it is a suspected carcinogen.
  • Latex: Latex allergies can develop from prolonged exposure. If this a concern for you as a parent, then opting for other teethers will be your best bet.

Although this may eliminate a lot of teething toys, you still have a range of safe and non-toxic options. You can find teething remedies that use natural materials and fabrics, such as wood or rubber.

Find a toy that is easy to clean. Be sure to follow any instructions that may come with the toy. They may suggest you place them in the fridge or freezer for some time before each use. Always sanitize a new teething toy before giving it to your baby.

Dr.Susie is literally heaven sent! On Father’s Day my daughter had an injury and lost her front tooth. I immediately took her to the ER however they do not handle any dental trauma. The RN at the ER googled emergency dental care and this location popped up. I’m so grateful to have reached Dr.Susie. I explained the circumstances and she immediately provided care, empathy and guidance. She offered to meet me at the office and replace the tooth in the socket and perform the necessary procedure to save the tooth. During the process the dr was kind and caring. Speaking positivity to my 11 yr old daughter who was beyond scared. Dr.Susie set proper expectations about the next steps. I really appreciate this pediatric dentist office. From the front desk agent Ms.Teresa to Dr.Susie I felt 100% supported and valued.

I highly recommend St. Johns Pediatric Dentistry. I have been taking my two girls here for years, and I can’t say enough about the exceptional care they provide. My daughters get excited when I tell them they are going to the dentist! They can't wait to pick out their own movie, put on those cool sunglasses, and select a reward at the end. The entire staff is welcoming, caring, understanding, and incredibly patient. The team goes above and beyond to make patients (and parents) feel comfortable.

By far, the best pediatrics dentist I have ever brought my children to. The kids are so comfortable and happy to be there. My 2 year old doesn't even want to leave. 🥰 They are professional, respectful, kind, and care about our children.🙏 I am so grateful for Saint John's pediatrics dentistry after we had a bad experience at Jacksonville's children's surgical center.

We are thankful for her and all the staff. The office is run so smoothly. This is truly a wonderful place to take children for dentistry.

I CANNOT say enough good things about this place. We’ve been going almost 2 years now and it’s such a pleasant experience every time. Had a couple non-routine visits, chipped tooth today for example, and they do everything they can to help you, explain to you the situation, potential problems. But also assure you that things are probably fine, just keep an eye, etc. They don’t push procedures at all like regular dentists, they explain what can be done, and then explain when certain things aren’t necessary. They are not money hungry at all, excellent dentists, excellent hygienists/assistants. I will definitely keep bringing my kids here and keep recommending this place.
